“Why is it important for children to write?
Children who practice creative writing generally do better in other subjects such as math, science, and languages. When they challenge themselves to come up with creative thoughts and solve problems, they also build up their confidence and discipline – skills they’ll need to succeed in all areas of life.
These are some of the benefits of creative writing:
- Imagination and Creativity
Creative writing encourages children to exercise their creative minds and imagination. It improves their ability to come up with alternatives ideas and this can lead to success in many areas, including problem-solving and analysis.
- Self-Expression
Children often have difficulty understanding and expressing how they feel. Creative writing provides them with a safe place to explore their experiences, which makes it a highly beneficial tool to identify and express their emotions, and in doing so, promote mental health.
- Self-Confidence
Writing gives children more opportunities to assert themselves and their opinions, and to develop their ‘voice’. These developments will strengthen their self-confidence.
- Communication and Persuasion Skills
A well-written piece involves a lot of thought, planning, organisation and use of language to get a point across. It’s great practice for children in laying out their thoughts and clearly persuading someone else to see their point of view.
Without stimulus, our creativity diminishes as we get older. Gradually, those crazy stories of fairy tale princesses battling ferocious dragons to save the town turn into business prose. So, encourage your children to write, to be creative, to use their imagination, and then praise them when they do. Build their confidence so that they will clearly communicate their point of view, their thoughts, and their feelings. Then think about publishing a collection of those precious stories to read over and over. They will see that you respect their creative talent and, in doing so, you’ll build their self-esteem.”
